K̲̓wa̲la — To Be Alive, Life
Created with the nostalgia of authentic Y2K streetwear in mind, this zip-up brings together a bold, statement-making silhouette with a deeply cultural meaning.
The fur hood was inspired by the unapologetic attitude of early streetwear oversized, expressive, and made to stand out. I wanted to take that familiar Y2K aesthetic and bring it into my own world by weaving culture and meaning into the design.
At the heart of this piece is k̲̓wa̲la, a Kwak’wala word meaning “to be alive, life.”
Paired alongside the word are formline-inspired wings. The wings represent the loved ones we carry with us, those who have walked before us, those whose presence continues to surround us, and the people who become a part of us throughout our journey.
They also represent ourselves as we walk this earth side: our strength, our spirit, our growth, and the life we continue to carry forward.
Together, k̲̓wa̲la and the wings represent life, spirit, remembrance, and connection.
This piece is a reflection of how I see Indigenous streetwear: our culture doesn’t have to be separated from contemporary fashion. It can live within it, move with it, and make a statement of its own.
